In 1905, after the dissolution of the union with Sweden, Norway won it's own voice in the international community.

This is why 'En egen stemme', "A Voice of Our Own," is the heading of the Centennial Anniversary.

"In 2005, Norway intends to let her voice be heard by multiple means:

Seminars, conferences, concerts, tours, exhibitions, festivals, performances, fairs,

guest lectures, updated education materials, projects for children, essay competitions,

sculptures, book launches, scholarships, etc.

The Centennial Anniversary is a true milestone, providing a unique opportunity to promote Norway abroad

and to promote Norway's international relations in a sound and meaningful way. The major objective for the

Anniversary in 2005 is to strengthen Norway's international image and standing in the areas of politics,

business, tourism, education and culture. Our goal is therefore to create a Centennial Program Abroad that

is long term, future oriented and strategic.

The Centennial program is international in its scope and targeting. It is also contemporary, at it reflects

modern society, art and current political perspectives.

However, our historical roots must not be forgotten. The historic process leading up to contemporary

status must be emphasized. How did we get where we are today? How have we evolved, while maintaining

our core traditions and historic identity?

We have close historical ties with the United States. The U.S. is one of our oldest, closest and most

important partners. We have close historical ties and share the same fundamental democratic values.

Our deep-rooted economic, potitical and security bonds have been strengthened by the numerous family

ties between Norwegians and Americans of Norwegian descent."
